They went to war, not for their country, nor to defend freedom. They did not yet understand the concept of true freedom. They went to war because they had believed the lies told by their elected officials and their movie-star heroes. Most were drafted and from low to middle class families. All wanted to do the right thing; serve and protect their loved ones. Many were children, and the average age was 19 years old. The youngest to die was 15 years old. None knew the politics involved before they went there and when they were deployed, the only politics that mattered was survival. They survived in ways that would stun their family and friends. Alcohol and drugs numbed their senses while they turned off any emotions for what they saw, heard and smelled. They ate to fill a void, not for the flavour of the food. They went away as children; the sons and daughters of common, God-fearing people. They came home as veterans. Many thought they could shoot a stranger without a second thought. It was what had been ingrained into them. When they left to storm the gates of hell, they went alone. When they came back, they came alone. One day they were fully immersed in combat and, 48 hours later, back home, hyper-vigilant, constantly being triggered. No one to talk to. Nobody that could understand the staring out at a treeline. The undeserved shame of being denied a beer at a local veterans organization because they were classed as being too young. The deep disappointment and despair from having older veterans say, "You do not belong here because you lost your war". They are our fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters, husbands and wives. They need our support, not our sympathy. They want our understanding, not our abandonment. They are Our Forgotten Solders. They do not consider themselves to be heroes, only men and women who went away to do a job they still don't understand, in a place where the general population was hostile to them. Can the war against PTSD be won Yes, if those who suffer with PTSD are provided with the right support and treatment in processing trauma and stress. K.L. McFadden suggests our first step is to stop ignoring the problem and pretending it will go away on its own. It won't.
